Have you ever done the perfect twist out, braid out, or wash and go but know that, at some point during the day, you have to hit the gym and your hair will turn into a total dry, frizzy mess? Just about every woman with natural hair that wants to workout understands this struggle. The best solution is protective styling. Protective styling, by definition, is when women with naturally kinky curly hair style their hair in a way that their curls are protected as oppose to being worn out. It can be as simple as a few two-strand twists or as extravagant as box braids. Either way, protective styling is a great way to be able to hit the gym while maintaining your style for later in the evening. Here’s how you do it.
Before you start your workout
Before you begin working out, you want to set your hair up. Using a wide cotton head band or a scarf, tie up the front of your hair, along the hair line. The scarf or cotton headband will collect the sweat as you workout. Next, section off your already styled curls into small to medium sections. Using Shea Moistures Frizz Free Curl Mousse, cover each section. Gently two strand twist each section without disturbing the curls you already have in place. The point of twisting them is simply to protect your curls throughout your workout without having to worry about how your hair looks.
After your workout
Once your workout is done, gently remove the scarf or headband. Carefully untwist each section and fluff from the root to the tip to revive your curls. Your hair should be as bouncy and defined as it was when you started your workout.
Working out is essential to a healthy lifestyle but you don’t have to sacrifice your styling to achieve that. Utilize quick protective styles and you can have beautiful hair and a healthy body.
